Light & power

Does LumaViva need direct sunlight?

Suitable indoor lamps and diffuse daytime room light can replenish LumaViva without direct sunlight. Actual harvesting depends on the source spectrum, illumination at the OPV panel, angle and exposure hours. A permanently dim position may not replenish daily consumption. Read how indoor light harvesting works.

What does self-powered mean? Does it need a cable?

Self-powered means LumaViva harvests energy from suitable indoor light and stores it in a rechargeable lithium-ion capacitor. It has no charging port and is designed to reduce routine plug-in charging. It still needs enough suitable light to replenish the energy used. Runtime depends on light exposure, stored energy and motion activity; prolonged darkness or heavy use can deplete it.

How long can LumaViva work in complete darkness?

LumaViva uses previously stored energy after the lights go out. The earlier 10–12-hour figure was a preliminary engineering estimate, not a verified continuous-light rating. A completed whole-product darkness-runtime test has not yet been published. Current motion lighting lasts 10 seconds per trigger and stays on while movement continues to be detected; there is no separate constant-on mode. Actual runtime depends on initial stored energy and motion activity. See general testing and operating guidance.

How does the light turn on?

When the environment is dark enough and stored energy is available, the PIR sensor triggers the warm light for 10 seconds. If movement continues to be detected, the light stays on. A stationary person may not continue to trigger a PIR sensor. There is no separate constant-on mode. LumaViva is primarily for suitable indoor-light environments and is not a waterproof outdoor lantern.

Is this just a solar cell?

LumaViva uses an organic photovoltaic (OPV) layer selected for suitable indoor light. The complete product combines harvesting, energy management, a rechargeable lithium-ion capacitor, a PIR sensor and warm-light output. Indoor harvesting depends on illumination, spectrum and exposure time; the OPV sample test results are shown in the Kickstarter project story.

Everyday use

How can I tell if LumaViva is working?

To test motion lighting, make sure stored energy is available and the environment is dark enough, then move in front of the PIR sensor. If the light does not turn on, insufficient stored energy is one possible cause. Place it in a brighter suitable indoor location, allow it to collect energy, and test again. Recovery time depends on light exposure and the initial stored energy. A failure to turn on does not by itself identify a capacitor fault. If the issue persists, contact leonard@luma-harvest.com.

What is the LumaHarvest Wish Card?

The Wish Card is a placement helper with an LED indicator. A clearly glowing LED can help identify a promising indoor-light location. Our current guidance considers around 5–8 hours of indoor light daily, but intensity, spectrum and light usage also matter. It is a placement guide, not a guarantee of runtime. It is not included as a free campaign stretch-goal gift. The 2,000-light milestone offers free personalized laser engraving instead.

Can I use LumaViva outdoors?

LumaViva is designed primarily for indoor-light environments. It can accompany you outdoors for occasional short use, such as on a porch, beside a tent, or at a picnic table. Keep it dry, protect it from prolonged direct sunlight, and bring it back indoors afterward. It is not waterproof or designed for prolonged outdoor storage or rugged outdoor conditions.

Kickstarter & delivery

When will it ship?

Estimated delivery to backers is February 2027. The Kickstarter early bird is $29.90 and limited to the first 300 backers, matching our initial production batch of 300 individual lights. Bundles and add-ons use multiple units; any additional batch quantities and schedules will be confirmed against total demand and manufacturing capacity. We will publish confirmed dispatch windows and transit estimates as production and freight arrangements are finalized. Delivery remains an estimate, not a guarantee, and may be affected by validation, production, certification, customs or shipping delays.

How will shipping charges be announced?

Delivery regions, shipping charges and any applicable taxes will be confirmed on the Kickstarter campaign page at launch. Join the waitlist to receive launch news and early-bird pricing announcements.

How do I submit my free laser-engraving message?

Free personalized laser engraving unlocks if the original campaign reaches 2,000 lights. Every eligible backer with a successfully paid light reward can have all lights in their eligible order engraved, including multi-light packs and qualifying add-ons. Each backer submits one message of up to 12 words, and all eligible lights in that order receive the same message. If unlocked, we will collect your wording in the post-campaign Kickstarter survey; you do not need to submit it when pledging. Please check spelling and capitalization carefully. You may choose no engraving. We will publish the lettering style, placement and submission deadline before collecting choices. Support-only pledges, late pledges and lights added after the original campaign do not qualify.
